Lady Soccer Bears and Their Progression
The girls’ soccer team has come a long way in the years since the school opened its doors.
The soccer teams’ tryouts finished about a month ago, the teams have been formed and the rosters are posted.
“We have been putting a lot of emphasis on individual development,” said Head Varsity Girls Soccer Coach Eric Swanberg.
Swanberg said he believes the teams are improving — not only in terms of their skills — but also in their overall athletic ability.
He said the players began developing their technical and tactical skills back during the 2014-2015 season. They are now reaping the fruits of their labor.
Swanberg said that specifically — as a team — they will continue to focus on possession of the ball, creative movements off the ball and ability to make plays.
He said he believes that, after two years of this strategy, the team is beginning to reap the benefits. The girls are stronger and faster, as athletes and possess the control and creativity of skillful players.
One thing Swanberg said he believes makes his team stand out is the players’ mentality. He believes their cold, hard determination to improve themselves led them to the state championship last year and this year they have won both games of the season.
Sophomore varsity player Hannah Behner, who plays center forward, said she has great expectations for the varsity team this season. “I think we will definitely make it to state this year,” she said.
Behner has been playing soccer for several years and played on the varsity team last year. She said she has always enjoyed playing with her teammates.
Despite taking some tough losses, she believes that she and her teammates are always ready to stand back up and face the rival teams.
One freshman on the JV team, Ashley Spina, said she is extremely excited for this season’s team.
“I’m a freshman, so this is going to be my first year playing for the school, but I can tell that this year Cambridge is gonna have a strong team!” said Spina
Spina isn’t the only one who has high expectations for the team this year.
“I believe all of our players serve a role in the overall success of our team whether they are starting, or coming in as a substitute, each player has a job to do when they step on the field,” said Swanberg.
He has faith that his players will give it their all.
