JV Players Hope to Follow in Reigning Champions’ Footsteps
Most of the school’s students likely know about the varsity softball team winning state. However, it’s not as likely that they’re aware of how this is affecting junior varsity girls.
This year, six senior girls are graduating and leaving the softball team. This means that girls from JV are most likely going to have to step into their shoes and play varsity.
“I’m super excited about next year being able to step up and be a leader,” said sophomore JV pitcher Taylor Allmen.
Allmen said she knows a little about the difficulties of playing varsity, as she was moved up to the top squad after JV season.
“Being able to watch the seniors play at state and being part of a winning team was a great example of how hard you need to keep working and growing in the program they’ve worked so hard to build,” Allmen said in an email.
Head JV coach Caitlin Still said she believes these JV girls are ready for varsity.
“I have no doubt in my mind that any current JV player could play at the varsity level without hesitation. Cambridge High School Lady Bears Fastpitch is very blessed with academic and athletic talent,” said Still.
Asked how varsity winning state affected JV, she said, “If anything, it pushes me to be a better fundamental coach at the JV level so the girls are prepared for the next level of play.”
Members of the JV team expressed pride in the varsity squad’s accomplishments.
“I am super proud of the seniors because they’ve worked so hard for all these years and finally got the recognition they deserve,” said Allmen.
Many of the JV girls said they look up to the varsity girls and hope to return to state next year.
