A Look at the Baseball Team’s Upcoming Hitting Facility
Since the crack of the first bat, baseball has been a popular sport at the school.
“I think that when a lot of middle schoolers think of Cambridge sports, baseball comes to mind, as it’s part of the basis of Cambridge culture,” said sophomore Cole Lear, who plays baseball, although not for the school.
Sophomore first-baseman and pitcher Justin Mullis said a winning team– like the school’s– can always get better.
“The school’s baseball players have experienced many victories,” said sophomore first baseman and pitcher Justin Mullis. “However, there’s always room for improvement.”
For the athletes to get better at hitting, the school is building a hitting facility.
This addition will consist of more than just batting cages. The building, which is expected to be 100 feet by 60 feet, will provide players with a new space to practice hitting, pitching and groundwork.
The facility will cost $200,000, according to the Cambridge Athletic Association’s website. The school has made a $60,000 down payment on the facility and is taking out a $140,000 loan from the Bank of North Georgia to cover the remainder.
The baseball association has wanted to build this facility, “since the beginning,” said Head Varsity Baseball Coach Miles Martin.
The facility will be built on the left field line, replacing the baseball cages there now.
The association is looking to finish it between December and January.
Some might say that the team’s record is impressive; Some could say that the school’s baseball program has definitely improved.
In 2013, they went 5-21.
By 2015, they had improved their record to 12-11.
And this past spring they were 24-6.
The baseball players are not currently practicing, as they aren’t allowed to practice baseball until the beginning of the season. However, they started lifting last month.
Cambridge isn’t the only school that is going to have a facility like this.
According to Martin, “most” public schools in the area, including Alpharetta, Milton and Roswell have a facility similar to this.
Lear said he predicts that what will have the biggest impact on the team’s performance this season is not the new facility, but rather, the players’ efforts.
“I think what’s important is those guys getting out on the field and practicing,” said Lear.
