Basketball: Bears Off to a Great Start
The school’s men’s and women’s varsity basketball squads are off to a strong start.
Both teams won their first two games of the season and will go on to play Pope Friday night.
The men’s team brought home a win against Walton (67-55) on Nov. 17, and the women beat Chamblee (41-35) on Nov. 21.
On Wednesday, both teams turned their single wins into a streak when they beat Chattahoochee on the road with a final scoreboard of 48-21 for the girls, and 63-57 for the boys.
The wins come as a welcome start to the season, especially after the teams graduated several players last year.
Nevertheless, both squads include a higher number of underclassmen than usual.
“Although we did lose a lot of our seniors, this season is looking to be a good one with these new players and returning ones,” said junior and third-year player Kamar Robertson. “I’m excited to see how we do.”
After losing five seniors on the boys’ team, there is a more diverse age group this year. Many sophomores, (and a couple of freshmen), have stepped up to fill those positions as varsity players.
The results were posted on Nov. 1, and the new teams are looking forward to the upcoming months.
“I think we’re going to have a good season, I’m looking forward to playing with this team,” said sophomore Benton Harkness, who’s playing on the boys’ varsity team after playing junior varsity for the 2016-2017 season.
“We have a lot of new girls this season, but I like this group and I know we’re going to do well,” said junior and third-year player Maggie Martin.
Friday’s game against Pope starts at 6:00 pm for the girls and at 7:30 for the boys.
