Thursday morning, Audio-Video Technology and Film (AVTF) teacher Harold Funderburk was named Teacher of the Year and front office assistant Lee Leathers was named Staff Member of the Year.

Funderburk won out of a group of finalists for the award: science teacher Quentin Singleton, math teacher David Pomerance and special education teacher Carn Hart.

Both are relatively new to the school, so the award was surprising to both.

Leathers started staffing for the school during the 2018-19 school year but subbed for the front office whenever she was needed.

“I was so surprised,” said Leathers.

Leathers couldn’t believe she won because she thought the other contestants would win over her, she said.

Funderburk, who teaches the school’s film class, started working for the school in 2017.

“I was in disbelief,” said Funderburk. “We’re career-tech, we do so much isn’t seen. I didn’t know that it would ever be recognized.”
