Late Start Approved for 2017-2018 School Year

For most students, the school day will start more than three hours later on two days a month beginning next year administrators announced this week.

Principal Edward Spurka announced Tuesday afternoon, (in an email to teachers and other administrators), that the request for flexibility proposed by the school governance council last semester had been approved.

The request originally included late-start days every Wednesday for the 2017-2018 school year. Former Assistant Principal Amy Price said last semester that sophomores, juniors and seniors wouldn’t come to school until 11:30 A.M, while freshman would report at the normal time.

The late-start days are intended to allow teachers more time for planning and collaboration as well as allowing freshmen the opportunity to participate in specialized programs. Assistant Principal Shavanda Toomer class these specialized programs as something of a “freshman academy.”

Assistant Principal Kim Premoli said Wednesday that the approval would only implement the program two Wednesdays of every month.

“We’re super excited about it,” said Premoli.

Toomer said she hoped upperclassmen would take advantage of the extra time to catch up on studying and rest.
