Flu Season Hits GA Hard

The school nurse, Karen Thimsen, said this year’s flu season is the worst Georgia has ever had. She has had a high number of students visiting her the last couple of months.

There are two types of influenzas. There is type A and type B and both of them are going around.

Type A-flu is the most common one, and both animals and humans can get it, whereas only humans can get type B.

Some of the symptoms are coughing, fever, headache, body aches, exhaustion and congestion.

“Those are usually the telltale signs,” said Thimsen.

Once you’ve had one type of flu, you can get the other type of flu, as well. However, you cannot get the same type of flu twice in the same flu season, said Thimsen

If you have not gotten the flu shot yet, Thimsen said you can still get it and it will last for six months. The best way to protect yourself from the flu is to get the flu shot according to the website for the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

To prevent getting the flu, Thimsen also recommended washing your hands often, because the most common way to spread the sickness is people touching door handles and other things that people with the flu have touched.

The flu season is usually from October to as late as May. However, most people get it between December and March, according to the CDC.

After you have had the flu, the CDC recommends you stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone without any fever-reducing medicine.
